Just Personal Care?

It’s time to do some myth-busting.

Let's Take the Scare out of Care!

The term social care has become synonymous with personal care- which can scare off many people. We can proudly and confidently say that this is not the case. You do not spend your life in the bathroom, do you? Well, neither do people with disabilities. They are out-living their fun, dynamic lives with the support of badass care workers! Assistance with personal care is fundamental – for some people –  but is such a small percentage of what care work is.

Facilitators of Joy and Wellbeing

We are passionate about ensuring the people we support are included and integrated into the local communities they live in. Careful planning, robust risk assessments and the individual person-centric focus facilitate this process.

One of our lovely ladies enjoys her weekly horse riding lessons. On her birthday this year, the equestrian centre held a small celebration! We focus on what people can do, not what they can’t do, and this person is a fantastic horse rider!

Many of our guys love baking! For those who care for adults with disabilities, we know that just the most minor things, like eating and enjoying food, can be a massive achievement for a person and is a positive indicator of how someone is feeling.

What most people take for granted, we make possible for those we support, like spending an afternoon visiting the animal farm or the local library. Reading is a great way to provide the encouragement and sensory aid a person with learning disabilities might need.

Family Testimonial

We wanted to send a message to you to say thank you for the care that you all provide to our sister. We feel that you all go above and beyond to ensure she has a happy life. It has been a tough year due to Covid, and we appreciate that you have continued to support Carol through such a tough time to keep her safe and well.

Whenever we see or speak to her, she talks very fondly of you all, and it is a joy to see her so settled and happy. Our sister is fortunate to have such a dedicated team.

We love hearing her talk about all her activities, from horse riding to pottery and going to the arcade. She has been supported on many holidays from America, Greece and Devon. We appreciate staff giving up their precious time taking Carol on these holidays.

Thank you so much.”

Integration into Local Communities

Getting our guys out and about and interacting with people improves their mental health and happiness. We want them to integrate into society fully, not just by attending activities or groups exclusive to adults with learning disabilities.

We work hard to ensure our service users receive the safe, fulfilling connection they need. We are not just helping our guys survive; we want them to have the happiest life possible, and one of the fundamentals of a happy life is positive human interaction.

Swim Day!

I have started doing care work every Tuesday with one of our fabulous ladies. Tuesday is her hydro day. I met her a few times before starting my training shadowing and shift work, and she is an absolute joy- but taking her swimming has shown me even more of her wonderful bubbly personality!

She becomes totally at peace when she gets in that water. Her laughter, smiles, and pure relaxation as she moves through the pool. She loves the jacuzzi! I love the water and swimming.

I was slightly nervous on my first shift- but every team member I have worked with has been kind, supportive and helpful to me each step of the way.

I look forward to getting to know our lady even more and promoting her happiness, movement, and consistent hobbies- that’s what every person has a right to have.”

Cultivating Relationships and Happiness

As humans, we need relationships to survive, and sadly, something that remains a dominant societal standard is the non-disabled norm. People with learning disabilities experience stigmatising attitudes, resulting in poor treatment and exclusion; therefore, they can often be isolated from their community. These people need support to access local spaces to integrate into and feel welcomed- which we facilitate at 3 Trees.

So there you have it! Social care is absolutely not just personal care. But don’t take out word for it; come see for yourself.
