Social Care Community at Work; Tales of Christmas

One of our valued teammates reflect on a special moment that occurred over the festive period…

Social Care Community

The care industry is not an obvious career choice. However, recent events on a personal level have reminded me why I have chosen to dedicate 17 years of my life to working in the industry.

Care at Christmas

Christmas can be such an enjoyable time when you are a Care Worker. I have had the privilege of being part of a team that strives to ensure the people they support enjoy the festivities the season offers. Parties are arranged, the best Christmas cake decorations, tree decorations, and Christmas day lunch with all its trimmings – you name it, we do it!

Christmas Crisis

On one snowy, freezing evening just before Christmas, my partner was due to pick me up after my shift. I received a call from them saying they had slipped on the ice on their way to the garage and struggled to move. It was lucky they had not incurred any severe injury to their back. However, mobility was going to be difficult for a few weeks.

The next day I had a brief conversation with one of my team members and stated I would not be able to get a Christmas tree this year as my partner was too injured, and I also couldn’t risk carrying it as I have a hip issue. I was deflated as I have collected baubles and tree decorations for several years; each ornament symbolises many personal memories.

Caring Teammates Step In

A couple of days later, there was a knock at my front door. Two of my valued teammates stood outside, carrying an enormous Christmas tree.

They even went into our loft, navigating our dodgy loft ladder to get the decorations; this was such an act of kindness, and I was an emotional wreck!

When I started reflecting on my 17 years in the care industry, I should not have been too surprised that my colleagues did this for us. As carers, we care for each other and the people we support. We love people and want to help where we can; it is integral to who we are.
